Sloth: NFL Week 7
The Packers are coming off the bye week healthier and without a sex scandal. I would call that a good week, unlike this week’s opponents. The Vikings are still reeling in the “Love Boat” scandal during their bye week. The press is just not letting up this week, add a pathetic “effort” last week against the Bears and the specter of charges being handed out next week, the Vikings are in a serious tailspin.
Packers (1-4) at Vikings (1-4) (+2) Over/Under: 45
If there is a team that is in a worse position than the Packers, it is the Vikings. Despite their identical records (they both beat the same team [New Orleans]) these two teams are headed in opposite directions. Off the field, the Vikings are in free-fall with their new owner promising sweeping changes in policy and hinting at personnel changes as well. On the field is not much better for the Purple People. Culpepper’s 12 INTs underscore the complete lack of offense on display. No passing game, no running game and the revamped defense has yet to have an impact. Their Head Coach is flailing and on the edge of being fired and the players don’t seem to care.
I have to wonder just how much worse the Viking situation would be if they hadn’t traded Randy Moss away in the offseason.
The Packer Defense is ranked in the top 10 for the first time since the heady Superbowl days and the Offense showed some life against the hapless Saints. Before going down for the season, Davenport was flashing some signs of brilliance behind an offensive line that is clearly starting to get on track. Brett didn’t throw an INT and had a fine day. Given that the Saints are bad, I still can’t help but think that the 4th quarter in Carolina 3 weeks ago was a turning point in the season for the Packers.
A resurgent defense and a running game that will finally take a step forward will propel the Packers to another blowout victory this week. I give the points and take the OVER.
